UFC returned with UFC 302 this weekend. The event was headlined by the Lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier when the showdown between Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa served as the co-main event.
In the opening round of the main event, Islam landed a quick takedown after which he was constantly on the lookout for a submission pushing Poirier to the backfoot. Poirier managed to keep the fight in standing till the last few seconds of the second round and had success with striking. Islam returned strongly in the third round and got Poirier to the ground under a minute. The challenger, however, managed to escape the clutches of Islam and stood up the last two minutes although he was having problems with swelling on his face.
Poirier managed to slash open the forehead of Islam in the fourth round and had success with the body punches when Islam was looking for the takedown throughout the round. A takedown from Islam midway through the fifth round ended the fight as Islam slept Poirier with a submission.
In the co-main event, Paulo Costa and Sean Strickland went the complete distance of five rounds. Strickland put on a dominant performance throughout the five rounds and took home a split decision win. The split decision scorecard proved to be a surprise to many considering the performance of Strickland.
Kevin Holland made quick work of Michal Oleksiejczuk and secured a first-round submission win by snapping his opponent’s arm. Elsewhere, Niko Price and Randy Brown got decision victories in their respective bouts on the main card. You can see the complete result from UFC 302 below.
