Five Indian Boxers Assure Medals at U19 Asian Boxing Championships

Five Indian male boxers advanced to the semifinals of the U19 Asian Boxing Championships on Thursday, assuring themselves of medals after decisive quarterfinal wins in Bangkok.

Shivam (55kg), Mausam Suhag (65kg), Rahul Kundu (75kg), Gaurav (85kg) and Hemant Sangwan (90kg) joined seven Indian women already in the semifinals, guaranteeing India 12 medals in the U19 category.

The U19 and U22 Asian Boxing Championships, held simultaneously, feature 40 Indian boxers — 20 in each age group. India is also assured of 13 medals in the U22 category, with five boxers set to fight for gold.

Shivam opened the day with a dominant 5-0 win over Uzbekistan’s Abdulaziz Abdunazarov. Suhag followed with a narrow 3-2 victory over Kyrgyzstan’s Mukhammed Alimbekov. Kundu forced a referee stoppage against South Korea’s Eunjo Jeong, while Gaurav battled past Chinese Taipei’s Kuang-Yao Cheng. Sangwan defeated Uzbekistan’s Muhammadrizo Siddikov to cap India’s wins, though Krish narrowly lost to Iran’s Abbas Gharshasbi in the 90+kg bout.
