The ONE Featherweight MMA World Title picture is about to get a lot clearer.
ONE Championship has confirmed that reigning ruler Tang Kai will make his second title defense against Shamil Gasanov at ONE Fight Night 42 on April 11 at Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium.
It is a matchup that pits two of the division's most complete fighters against each other with the sport's ultimate prize on the line.
The 30-year-old from China arrived and reeled off six consecutive victories over well-established competition before earning a title shot against Thanh Le, the American-Vietnamese fighter who had established himself as one of the most dangerous fighters on the roster.
What followed was a five-round war that Tang Kai won by unanimous decision in 2022, making him China's first male MMA World Champion in the process. An injury interrupted his reign, and when Thanh Le claimed the interim title in his absence, the stage was set for one of ONE Championship's most anticipated rematches.
Tang Kai delivered when it mattered most, stopping Thanh Le by TKO in 2024 to unify the belts and leave no doubt about who the featherweight division's true ruler was.
His numbers tell the story of a genuinely dangerous champion. A 19-3 career record, an 8-1 ONE mark, five finishes all point to a fighter who does not simply win — he imposes his will.
Gasanov, meanwhile, has constructed a case for this title shot that is difficult to argue with.
The 30-year-old Russian brings an 18-1 career record and a 6-1 ONE mark into the contest, riding a five-fight winning streak that has swept aside all challengers in his path.
His most defining moment came in 2025 when he faced American grappling star Garry Tonon, the man responsible for the only blemish on his record, and erased that defeat with a composed and convincing victory.
