Takeru Believes ONE 172 Could Spark A Martial Arts Revolution In Japan

Takeru Segawa gave fans a preview of what to expect on March 23 at ONE 172 in his five-round kickboxing super-fight against Rodtang Jitmuangnon with an open workout.

The Japanese superstar believes the match could have ripple effects and begin a new era for martial arts in the land of the rising sun.

“This event truly brings together Japan's top fighters against ONE's top fighters. It's become a ‘Japan vs. World’ scenario for this Japan event,” Takeru said at the event.

“If we can demonstrate Japan's strength here, I believe the center of combat sports can return to Japan once again, so this is an incredibly important event.”

Every match of the card features a Japanese talent, including each of the five ONE World Championship contests. With a stacked card, Takeru had high praise for where it could elevate the industry in his home country.

“I believe this event will be the first step in Japanese combat sports becoming the center of the world again. I want to showcase Japan's strength globally with all Japanese fighters winning in the best possible way,” the 33-year-old said.

For Takeru, everything is on the line. In fact, although no gold is up for grabs, this is his World Title fight.

The preparation is done and he is ready to showcase his skills in the most talked about kickboxing match in years.

“When I said this will be my masterpiece fight — I've fought as a champion, in K-1, representing Japan. This time, I want to fight exactly how I want to. I'll fight as if this is my last match, willing to break myself if necessary. I believe fighting this way will defeat Rodtang, so that's the fight I want to have,” Takeru said.
