Sumit Bhyan wins ONE Lumpinee Contract and Best Fighter Award at GAMMA Asians

Indian MMA Fighter Sumit Bhyan has won the ONE Lumpinee Contract and the Best Fighter Award at the 2022 GAMMA Asian Pacific MMA Championship which was held in Thailand this past weekend.

Sumit earned himself accolades after securing a gold medal in the lightweight MMA category at the event. Training out of KOI Combat Academy in Bangalore under Coach Vishal Seigell, Sumit had earlier won Silver Medals at the GAMMA World Championship and GAMMA Asian Championship.

He has been unstoppable in the Indian domestic circuit and had put out dominant performances outside India as well.

This time around, he got a walkover in the semi-finals and went up against Bakhtiyar Kassymov in the finals of the lightweight category. Sumit was in the driving seat of the fight from the start itself and made quick work of his opponent with an RNC choke in the first round.

The submission earned Sumit his first Gold Medal on the international GAMMA platform. Sumit’s KOI Combat Academy teammate Niranjan Phanjoubam also secured a gold medal at the event taking India’s total gold medal tally to 2.

The win earned Sumit the Best fighter Award of the tournament and he has also won the ONE Lumpinee Contract which will now offer him a bigger platform to compete.

For the uninitiated, ONE Lumpinee is a series of events which ONE Championship will be hosting in association with the Royal Thai Army. The series is expectedto host at least 52 Shows in  2023 meaning that there will be an event every week.

As for India, The country won a grand total of 17 medals at the 2022 GAMMA Asian Pacific MMA Championship including 4 Silver Medals and 11 Bronze Medals.

The best athletes of the event were awarded to:

  • Sandra Succar (Lebanon) 65.8kg category
  • Sumit Bhyan (India) 70.3kg category
  • Farida Abdueva (Krgystzan) 52.2kg striking MMA category
  • Almaz Sarsembekov (Kazakhstan) 61.2kg striking MMA category
