Shamil Gasanov Stops Submission Ace Garry Tonon, Ready For Tang Kai Title Fight

Shamil Gasanov has positioned himself as the next challenger for ONE Featherweight MMA World Champion Tang Kai after defeating submission specialist Garry Tonon via unanimous decision at ONE Fight Night 34 on 2 August.

The third-ranked contender's victory at Bangkok's Lumpinee Stadium marked his fifth consecutive win in ONE Championship and demonstrated significant evolution in his grappling defense against one of mixed martial arts' most dangerous submission artists.

Gasanov's preparation specifically targeted Tonon's world-class ground game, with the Dagestani revealing the extensive training methods that neutralized the American's submission threats.

"Actually, this [grappling defense] has been a big part of my training. I'm always in my training and my preparations. I'm always giving my back up to be able to practice getting out of that position, out of that submission," Gasanov explained post-fight.

The victory served as redemption for Gasanov, who suffered a defeat to Tonon in 2023 and spent two years preparing for this rematch opportunity.

"I called him out when I joined the league because I knew he was a strong grappler. I do think I was dominating the fight for a while, in the end, I did lose. I am happy that I got my revenge today," he stated.

Gasanov's game plan proved effective throughout the three-round contest, with Tonon visibly struggling in the final frame as his energy reserves depleted under constant pressure.

"In the third round, He was struggling, had to be more reserved, control his energy expenditure. And he knows that he lost the third round, or he gave up the third round. But other than that, he was very confident, happy with himself," Gasanov analyzed.

His five-fight winning streak, combined with his improved grappling defense and striking prowess, makes him a compelling challenger for Tang Kai's featherweight crown.
