Oumar Kane has shared the ring with some of the biggest names in heavyweight MMA. But in January, he found himself hosting one of the biggest names on the internet.
Reigning ONE Heavyweight MMA World Champion "Reug Reug" welcomed streaming megastar IShowSpeed to Dakar, Senegal, as part of the popular content creator's Africa tour, treating him to a personal introduction to the traditional Senegalese wrestling that first made Kane a household name in his home country.
Speed's reach is staggering — more than 50 million followers across social media and a level of recognition that transcends sports, culture, and geography.
Kane, who consumes his content, understands exactly why the 21-year-old has captured the attention of an entire generation.
"I watch his videos. He's a very funny guy. The new generation likes this type of content. He's very young — he's 21 years old. Everybody likes him, you know what I mean?" Kane said.
But it was the in-person meeting that genuinely caught the champion off guard. Screens, it turns out, do not do Speed justice.
"I was actually very surprised when I first met him, because I didn't expect him to be so big. You can't tell from videos how muscular he actually is. If Speed was an MMA fighter, he would be a middleweight. He's a big man," Kane said.
Coming from a man who stands 6 feet tall and walks around at approximately 260 pounds, that assessment means something.
Kane dismantled previously undefeated three-division MMA ruler Anatoly Malykhin in late 2024 to claim the ONE Heavyweight MMA World Title, and his 7-1 ONE record tells the story of a fighter who has earned his place among the sport's elite.
"Yes, Speed was very fast, and he picked things up quickly. He's a fast learner. He picked up the crash course quite quickly, to be fair," Kane said.
