With ONE on Prime Video 5: De Ridder vs. Malykhin, ONE Championship (ONE) made a triumphant return to the Mall of Asia Arena. The event featured a number of intriguing matches, with two thrilling World Title fights serving as the event's centrepiece.
Malykhin ends the undefeated run of De Ridder
In the main event, undefeated ONE Interim Heavyweight World Champion Anatoly Malykhin knocked out "The Dutch Knight" Reinier de Ridder in the first round to win the ONE Light Heavyweight World Title. This was "The Dutch Knight's" first loss in a professional fight.
Early on, Malykhin demonstrated his strength and quickness by punishing De Ridder with resounding right hooks and powerful body blows.
The Russian's takedown defence was strong despite "The Dutch Knight's" best efforts to bridge the gap and apply his characteristic body lock. De Ridder was forced to trade strikes due to Malykhin's wrestling, which prevented him from taking the fight to the mat.
With less than 30 seconds left in the round, Malykhin injured De Ridder along the Circle Wall to complete the finish. Malykhin's accomplishment not only made him the ONE World Champion in two divisions, but it also netted him a sizable US$100,000 prize.
Kade Ruotolo outclasses Matheus Gabriel
Kade Ruotolo, the reigning ONE Lightweight Submission Grappling World Champion, outlasted opponent Matheus Gabriel in the co-main event until the clock ran out. Ruotolo's agility presented a challenge for Gabriel, who repeatedly decided to pull guard in an effort to impede the World Champion in a title defence.
But due to Ruotolo's aggressive entry, numerous submission attacks—including a knee bar—were launched, nearly ending the bout. In the end, Ruotolo won by unanimous vote after receiving scores from all three judges.
Debut ends in no contest
After an inadvertent foul in the opening round, Roberto Soldic's eagerly awaited ONE Championship debut came to a controversial conclusion. Soldic was rendered helpless after taking an unintentional knee to the groyne against the Circle Wall from Murad Ramazanov. The contest was declared void.
Jackie Buntan, a Filipino-American strawweight striker, debuted her abilities in front of a fervent Manila crowd to a thunderous welcome. Buntan controlled opponent Amber Kitchen throughout the three-round fight with her flawless timing and combinations, even causing a knockdown with her blows in the last round. The Filipino-American was able to win by a unanimous vote thanks to that sequence.
Lowen Tynanes, a lightweight champion from Hawaii, competed in a gruelling match against the hard-hitting South Korean fighter Dae Sung Park, and turned in a strong performance. Early on, Park was aggressive, and Tynanes tried to take him down. Over the course of three rounds of grappling, the Hawaiian dominated the action on the mat and neutralised Park's strength. In the end, Tynanes was successful in winning by a narrow margin.
