Indian Olympian Simranjit Kaur has officially turned professional, becoming the latest elite boxer from the country to enter the pro ranks. The 29-year-old has signed with boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. and Indian professional boxer Mandeep Jangra to guide her transition.
Simranjit represented India at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, advancing to the round of 16 in the women’s 60kg category. A two-time Asian Championships medallist, she was also the first female boxer from Punjab to represent India at the Olympics.
"Mandeep Jangra is already making the country proud in the professional ring and I will also try to get recognition for the country," Simranjit told PTI. “Roy Jones Jr. is the best promoter and I will definitely take my career forward with him.”
After a nine-month hiatus from competition, Simranjit returned at the National Championships in March and finished second in the 65kg division.
She becomes the third Indian boxer to turn pro this year, following World Championship medallists Nishant Dev and Amit Panghal. Past Indian amateurs who made the move include Vijender Singh, Vikas Krishan, Sarita Devi and Neeraj Goyat.
