Michael Chandler caused a stir in the world of sports entertainment with his unexpected appearance on this week's WWE RAW, where he issued a challenge to UFC superstar Conor McGregor for a match.
In an interview on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Chandler provided insights into how the impromptu moment unfolded and revealed an injury he sustained while delivering the promo.
"I literally injured my voice on Monday Night Raw," Chandler shared, explaining that he strained his vocal cords while addressing the WWE audience. Despite the unforeseen setback, Chandler's appearance garnered attention and marked a memorable crossover between UFC and WWE.
The UFC fighter clarified that the moment was planned to some extent, as he was scheduled to attend RAW as part of the collaboration between TKO Group, UFC, and WWE. However, Chandler seized the opportunity to take matters into his own hands, improvising his promo and calling out McGregor on live television.
Reflecting on the spontaneity of the moment, Chandler revealed that he initially intended to simply appear on camera before suggesting that he should also speak on the microphone.
"Two minutes before, they said they were going to put the camera on me. I said, 'Why don’t you give me the microphone?' 'Hold on, let me run it up the flagpole.' About a minute later, 'You’re going on and you’ll get the microphone if you want it,'" Chandler recounted, highlighting the adrenaline-fueled spontaneity of the situation.
Regarding his potential involvement in future WWE shows or even WrestleMania 40, Chandler remained coy, hinting that there could be more appearances but refraining from confirming any specifics.
