Indian Boxers Ready for Inaugural World Boxing Championships in Liverpool

India will field a 20-member boxing squad led by Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain and two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen at the inaugural World Boxing Championships 2025 in Liverpool, beginning September 4 at the M&S Bank Arena.

The biennial tournament, scheduled through September 14, will feature top amateur boxers from across the globe. India enters in strong form, having collected 17 medals at the World Boxing Cups in Brazil and Kazakhstan earlier this year.

At the Brazil Cup, India secured six medals, highlighted by Hitesh’s gold and Abhinash Jamwal’s silver, while adding four bronze. The momentum carried into Kazakhstan, where the team won 11 more medals, including three golds, with Nupur Sheoran clinching top honors in the heavyweight division.

“Our preparation in Sheffield has been nothing short of exceptional,” said Dharmendra Singh Yadav, coach of the men’s team. “This group is a mix of seasoned champions and young talent ready to make their mark.” Women’s coach Dr. Chandralal added, “The dedication and hard work I’ve seen are truly inspiring. We are ready to showcase the fighting spirit of Indian boxing.”

The Indian women’s lineup features Borgohain (75 kg), Zareen (51 kg), Nupur Sheoran (80+ kg), Pooja Rani (80 kg), Minakshi (48 kg), Sakshi (54 kg), Jaismine (57 kg), Sanju (60 kg), Neeraj Phogat (65 kg), and T. Sanamacha Chanu (70 kg).

On the men’s side, Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (50 kg), Pawan Bartwal (55 kg), Sachin (60 kg), Abhinash Jamwal (65 kg), Hitesh (70 kg), Sumit (75 kg), Lakshya Chahar (80 kg), Jugnoo (85 kg), Harsh Choudhary (90 kg), and Narender (90+ kg) will compete.

The contingent completed a high-intensity training camp in Sheffield from August 18 to September 1, working under coaches Oinam Geeta Chanu, Leishangthem Radia Devi, Mohammed Aitesamuddin, Abhishek Sah, Torak Kharpran, and Jaisingh Dyandev Patil, with support from physiotherapists and medical staff.
