India’s Lakshya Chahar advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the men’s 80kg category at the World Boxing Championships 2025 with a commanding 5-0 victory over Hussein Iashaish of Jordan on Sunday.
Chahar started the bout aggressively, and although Iashaish narrowed the gap in the second round, the Indian boxer raised his intensity in the final round to seal the dominant win.
In contrast, Pawan Bartwal’s run in the men’s 55kg division ended earlier in the day after a 0-5 loss to Uzbekistan’s Mirzakhalolov Mirazizbek.
India has sent a 20-member squad to the inaugural championships, which are being held under the aegis of World Boxing, the newly formed international governing body for the sport.
Three more Indian boxers are set to compete in the evening session on Sunday. Jaismine (women’s 57kg) will face Brazil’s Jucielen Cerqueira Romeu, Sanamacha Chanu (women’s 70kg) will meet Natalya Bogdanova of Kazakhstan, and Abhinash Jamwal (men’s 65kg) will take on Hugo Barron of Mexico.
