In a devastating turn of events, 23-year-old Japanese boxer Kazuki Anaguchi has succumbed to a brain injury after a Boxing Day points defeat in Tokyo. Anaguchi faced compatriot Seiya Tsutsumi on the undercard of the highly anticipated super-bantamweight clash between pound-for-pound superstar Naoya Inoue and Marlon Tapales.

Despite being dropped four times during the bout, Anaguchi exhibited remarkable resilience, managing to endure until the final bell. However, all three judges unanimously scored the fight in favor of Tsutsumi.

The aftermath of the match was alarming, as Anaguchi struggled to stand and required assistance from his team in the ring. Immediate concern for his well-being led to his prompt transportation to the hospital. Unfortunately, he lost consciousness in the ambulance and slipped into a coma. Emergency surgery was performed to address a subdural hematoma, but regrettably, Anaguchi could not recover from his severe injuries, and his passing was confirmed on Friday.

Before facing Tsutsumi, Anaguchi boasted an undefeated professional career, securing victory in all six of his previous fights, with two wins by knockout. His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, prompting reflections on the inherent risks within the sport.

Promoter Lou Dibella expressed his condolences on social media, stating, 'Rest in peace, Kazuki Anaguchi. Prayers up for those he's left behind. Another reminder of #boxing's deadly risks and the importance of best protecting our fighters from them.' The tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the physical toll that boxing can exact and the critical need to prioritize the safety and well-being of athletes in the sport.
