John Martin Named CEO of Professional Fighters League, Ushering in New Era

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) has appointed John Martin as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant step in the organization’s continued global expansion. A seasoned executive with decades of leadership in media, entertainment, and sports, Martin brings extensive experience as both CEO and CFO at some of the world’s largest media companies.

John Martin is THE ideal CEO to lead the next chapter of growth at PFL — he is a proven media, content, and sports executive who is a respected global leader and business operator at scale,” said Donn Davis, PFL Founder and Chairman. “I am thrilled to work closely with John to deliver on the vision to make PFL everything the fans, fighters, and sport of MMA deserves.”

Martin’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the PFL, which has established itself as a unique force in the MMA landscape. He will now oversee all aspects of the league’s strategy, management, operations, finances, and personnel.

MMA represents the biggest opportunity in sports, and the PFL has secured a unique position that will never be replicated,” said Martin. “My two greatest passions are leading media companies and MMA, so stepping into the position of PFL CEO is truly a dream role for me.”

As part of the executive transition, Peter Murray will assume the new role of CEO of PFL International, where he will spearhead the launch and growth of the PFL’s international leagues. Murray will report directly to Martin under the league’s expanded global structure.

Martin previously served as Chairman and CEO of Turner LLC from 2014 to 2018, leading the company to $13 billion in annual revenue and nearly $5 billion in operating income. He managed a portfolio that included CNN, TNT, TBS, Turner Sports, and numerous digital and content platforms. He also served as Chief Financial Officer at Time Warner Inc., overseeing major divisions such as HBO, Warner Bros., Turner, and Time Warner Cable.

A longtime MMA enthusiast, Martin began training in martial arts in his 20s and went on to earn a black belt in karate and a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He competed in amateur tournaments through his 40s and was an early supporter of MMA’s rise, advocating for the UFC’s cable expansion during his tenure at Time Warner Cable.

Martin is a Wharton School graduate (Class of 1989), where he played Division I soccer, and earned his MBA from Columbia Business School in 1994.

As the new CEO of PFL, Martin is expected to lead the league into a dynamic new chapter, building on its momentum as a rising power in the world of mixed martial arts.
