Nurmagomedov Names Top Welterweight Threat for Islam Makhachev Ahead of UFC move

UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov believes three welterweights in particular could pose problems for former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev as he prepares for his move to 170 pounds.

Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) vacated his lightweight title earlier this summer after setting a new record with four successful defenses, including a submission win over Renato Moicano at UFC 311. He is now expected to face Jack Della Maddalena before the end of the year in his welterweight debut.

“In the welterweight division, I see Shavkat Rakhmonov as someone who commands respect and brings real risk,” Nurmagomedov said in an interview with Kamil Gadzhiyev. “Shavkat, Belal Muhammad … Ian Garry, I wouldn’t consider him such a serious threat. I don’t see Sean Brady as a big threat either. Stylistically, he’s too convenient for Islam. Islam would outstrike him, and if they grappled, Islam would control him.”

Nurmagomedov also pointed to Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) as a dangerous challenge, citing his experience against elite competition.

“Judging by his skills, his technique, his striking, and the way he defends against wrestlers … he’s fought wrestlers, strikers, and physically strong guys. He’s passed every test,” Nurmagomedov said. “He’s a 9-0 UFC champion, and he trains with the same team that prepared Alexander Volkanovski for Islam. Putting all that together, I see a very dangerous opponent.”

Makhachev, who reigned as the most dominant lightweight in UFC history, now looks to cement his place among the welterweight elite.
