Islam Makhachev, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, has weighed in on Michael Chandler's fixation on Conor McGregor, suggesting that the former is squandering valuable time pursuing a fight that may not materialize.

Chandler, with a record of 23 wins and 8 losses in MMA, and 2 wins and 3 losses in the UFC, has been inactive since his intense battle with Dustin Poirier in November 2022. His anticipated matchup against McGregor was speculated ever since their involvement in Season 31 of "The Ultimate Fighter," which aired from May to August last year.

McGregor, a seasoned UFC veteran with 22 wins and 6 losses overall and a UFC record of 10 wins and 4 losses, has announced his intention to return to the Octagon on June 29, eagerly awaiting a fight. However, UFC CEO Dana White has hesitated to confirm the date, citing McGregor's financial status as a contributing factor to the delay.

Expressing his views to MMA Junkie, Makhachev criticized Chandler's continued pursuit of the McGregor fight, suggesting that Chandler should have redirected his focus long ago to capitalize on his prime fighting years.

"In this situation, Chandler looks very bad," Makhachev remarked. "Because how many years has he been waiting for this fight? Every night he goes to bed and has a dream, 'I will fight with Conor McGregor.' Man, you’re not young. You have a chance to fight someone, make money. And after, you can fight with Conor."

Highlighting the risks of fixation on a single opponent, Makhachev emphasized that Chandler's persistence in pursuing McGregor might not be conducive to his career progression. "He had already lost his last fight. Lose one more time and make money. Maybe if you lose again, Conor will see this fight and think, 'Oh, OK, I can beat this guy.' It’s a good fight for the fans, but for the division it means nothing," Makhachev added.

While Chandler awaits a potential showdown with McGregor, the Irish superstar is currently engaged in promotional activities for his upcoming movie "Road House," starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie is set to premiere on March 21 on Prime Video, keeping McGregor occupied with his burgeoning Hollywood endeavors.
