A formidable trio of accomplished boxers, including two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen, Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain, and former world number one Amit Panghal, will spearhead India's campaign at the prestigious Strandja Memorial Boxing tournament commencing on February 1 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Notably, this contingent differs from the one slated to compete in the upcoming Olympic qualifiers later in February in Italy. The tournament holds special significance as it marks the return of Olympian Amit Panghal to international boxing, ending his absence from the ring in the last two tournaments, including the 2023 Asian Games and World Championships.
The trio of Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain, and Preeti will be making a comeback after their stellar performances at the Asian Games 2022, where they clinched medals and secured the 2024 Paris Olympic quota for India.
With four quotas already secured in women's boxing, only two weight categories (60kg and 66kg) remain unclaimed, while the male boxers aim to secure their quotas in the upcoming Olympic qualifiers later this month. Shiva Thapa, Hussamuddin, Nishant Dev, and Deepak Bhoria are among the contenders vying for the coveted spots.
