Elite Contender Series Aims to Raise the Standard of Amateur MMA in India

The upcoming Elite Contender Series (ECS) event on March 14 in Bangalore is aiming to provide a stronger platform for amateur MMA fighters in India. The event, hosted by coach and grappler Peeyush Pandey, will take place at Relentless Strength and will be streamed live on the LockerRoom India YouTube channel.

Pandey explained that the idea behind ECS came from his experience traveling across the country as a coach and commentator. He believes the amateur level of MMA in India still lacks structure and proper opportunities for fighters. According to him, many amateur events do not provide proper matchmaking, facilities, or even recorded fights, making it difficult for fighters to build their records and careers.

To address this issue, ECS has focused on creating a professional fight card format instead of tournament-style competition. Pandey said tournaments with multiple fights in one day can negatively impact fighters’ careers and development.

The event received around 150 registrations within three weeks, from which the organizers selected 40 fighters across 20 bouts. The card will feature athletes from across India as well as fighters from Nepal, creating an international element for the competition.

The main event will feature an India vs Nepal matchup, as Balaji MK (5-0) takes on Samar Aryal (3-0) in a featherweight contest. The co-main event will see AKS Pandey face Ankit Yadav, a matchup that Pandey expects to be highly competitive given the fighters’ amateur records.

Several other notable fights have also been added to the card, including Nawaraj Parajuli vs Devgun Marandi, as well as bouts featuring fighters from gyms across the country.

Pandey also emphasized the importance of building a strong amateur circuit in India similar to countries like Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, where fighters gain extensive experience before turning professional.

The ECS founder believes that consistent amateur events are essential to developing the next generation of Indian MMA fighters and hopes the promotion can become a stable platform for rising talent. Fans will be able to watch the event live starting at 5 PM IST on March 14 through LockerRoom India’s YouTube channel.
