Denice "The Menace" Zamboanga has officially been elevated to undisputed ONE Women's Atomweight MMA World Champion following former titleholder Stamp Fairtex's extended recovery from a serious knee injury.
ONE Championship made the announcement after it became clear that Stamp would be sidelined longer than expected, postponing their anticipated summer showdown.
Zamboanga, who captured the interim crown in January at ONE Fight Night 27 with a dominant TKO victory over Alyona Rassohyna, has found new motivation in her championship status.
"When they elevated me to undisputed ONE Atomweight MMA World Champion, it just motivated me more in training. Now when I'm in the gym, I cannot afford to slack off one bit," Zamboanga said.
As the first Filipina to win an MMA World Title, the 28-year-old acknowledges the increased responsibility that comes with her achievement. She particularly values her growing influence among her compatriots and the unwavering support she's received throughout her journey.
"Aside from being a World Champion, I'm most grateful that I was able to inspire and be a role model for people. The support I've received is truly overwhelming," the newly minted queen said.
Despite reaching the pinnacle of her division, Zamboanga believes this accomplishment marks just the beginning of her career.
While her anticipated clash with former teammate Stamp Fairtex remains on hold, Zamboanga maintains that the extended buildup will only heighten fan anticipation for the eventual showdown.
In the meantime, she has identified #2-ranked contender Ayaka Miura as a worthy challenger.
"So far, the most active and I feel most deserving is Ayaka Miura. We know what she's gonna do every fight, yet she's been able to finish most of her opponents. She's a dangerous challenger, to be honest," Zamboanga said.
For now, Zamboanga continues to balance her training regimen, working diligently while avoiding the overtraining that has led to injuries in her past.
