Commonwealth Games 2022: India piled up 22 medals in Combat Sports

The Commonwealth Games 2022 is in the books and India finished the campaign at the games in the fourth position with a total medal count of 61. The team had won 22 Gold Medals, 16 Silver Medals and 23 Bronze Medals at the event which saw 210 Indians competing across 16 sporting disciplines.

The team competed in three major combat sporting disciplines at the event: Boxing, Judo and Wrestling. India sent a team of 12 boxers for Boxing with 8 Men and 4 Women. As for Judo, it was a team of six competitors with three men and three women. Wrestling saw the participation of 12 wrestlers equally split across six men and six women.

Altogether, a total of 30 athletes competed in Combat Sports events at the Commonwealth Games for India from which, a total of 22 medals were won including 9 Gold Medals. You can see the medal breakup below.

Medals in Combat Sports for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games

  • Judo: 3 Medals (2 Silver and 1 Bronze)
  • Boxing: 7 Medals (3 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze)
  • Wrestling: 12 Medals (6 Gold, 1 Silver, 5 Bronze)

This accounts for 36% of the medals from Combat Sports. If we break it down further, 4.92% of the medals came from Judo, 11.48% of the medals came from Boxing and 19.67% of medals came from Wrestling.

Wrestling also contributed to the most amount of Gold Medals for the country with 6 Gold Medals while Boxing contributed to the third the greatest number of gold medals with three gold medals.

India in Judo at Commonwealth Games 2022

India sent a team of six Judokas for the Commonwealth Games this year in Birmingham. You can see the team below.

  • Tulika Maan

Out of the six that went, three medals were secured by the team. Tulika Maan and Shushila Likmabam won silver medals in the Women’s -78 KG category and Women’s -48 KG category respectively while Vijay Kumar Yadav won Bronze in the Men’s 60 KG Category.

  • Silver Medal: Shushila Likmabam (Women’s 48 KG)
  • Silver Medal: Tulika Maan (Women’s +78 KG)
  • Bronze Medal: Vijay Kumar Yadav (Men’s 60 KG)

Jasleen Singh and Suchika Tariyal finished fifth in their respective weight categories at the event as well.

India in Boxing at Commonwealth Games 2022

India had a total of 12 boxers for the event with 8 boxers in the men’s squad and 4 boxers in the women’s squad. You can see the team below.

Out of the 12 boxers, India managed to secure seven medals including three gold medals. The Gold Medals came thanks to Nitu Ghanghas who was making her game debut, Nikhat Zareen who came on the back of her World Championship triumph and Former World Number 1 Amit Panghal.

Sagar Ahlawat won the lone silver medal in boxing for the country. The Bronze Medals came thanks to Jaismine Lamboria, Rohit Tokas, and Mohammad Hussamuddin. Interestingly, Olympic Medallist Lovlina Borgohain was the only boxer from the women’s squad that could not secure a medal at the event.

India in Wrestling at Commonwealth Games 2022

A total of 12 wrestlers were in action for India in Birmingham and all 12 boxers secured medals at the event. The Wrestling team brought home six gold medals with the likes of Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Deepak Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Ravi Kumar Dahiya and Naveen Malik securing the gold medals.

Combat Sports in the overall tally for India

So far, India has won a total of 114 Medals in Wrestling including 49 Gold Medals which is only second to Shooting and Weight lifting in the overall standings. Boxing comes in at the fourth position in the overall medal count with a total of 44 Medals and 11 Gold Medals. Judo, on the other hand, has earned five silver medals and six bronze medals for India over the course of history.
