Myanmar icon Aung La N Sang scripted the perfect ending to his illustrious career by defeating former titleholder Zebaztian Kadestam by TKO at ONE Fight Night 36 on 4 October.
The 40-year-old former two-division ONE World Champion's retirement victory in the middleweight bout earned him a US$50,000 performance bonus, capping a legendary career that will see him inducted into the ONE Championship Hall of Fame at ONE 173 on 16 November in Tokyo, Japan.
The Kill Cliff FC representative improved his ONE Championship record to 16 wins and 31 career victories in his farewell performance against the 34-year-old Swedish powerhouse.
Speaking after his emotional victory, Aung La N Sang reflected on the significance of the moment.
"It felt good. It hasn't soaked in, but I'm sure it's going to be one for the ages. I'm just very appreciative that it all went well, and all the preparation and hard work came to this," the retiring champion said.
The former ONE Middleweight and Light Heavyweight World Champion fought against a formidable opponent for his final dance, facing a fighter he genuinely respected and admired.
"He hits so hard. I felt his punches, and now I know why he knocks people out cold. For my last dance, who better way to do it against than somebody I looked up to and somebody I really like as a fighter," Aung La N Sang said.
His upcoming Hall of Fame induction places him alongside fellow legends Demetrious Johnson and Bibiano Fernandes as only the third inductee in ONE Championship history.
"It's very cool. You work so hard for this, decades of hard work, and then it comes to this moment where you're honored by the promotion and by the people. It's a dream come true. I am very grateful and very thankful for this," he said.
When asked what drove him through two decades of professional competition, the Myanmar legend pointed to deeper motivations beyond championships and accolades.
"My love for this sport. My love for becoming a better version of myself, and my faith in God," Aung La N Sang revealed.
