Indian MMA star Vaibhav Shetty had to settle for a Bronze Medal at the 2020 IMMAF Oceania Open Championship after suffering a defeat to Hakaraia Wilson of New Zealand in the Semi-Finals of the Middleweight category.
Vaibhav was the lone representative of India at the event after former Junior World Champion Mahboob Khan was forced out of the tournament due to visa issues.
Despite the defeat in his lone match, Vaibhav, known for his resilient attitude, posted that he is one to the next one on Instagram.
“Sadly lost this one. Match went to the ground and this turned into a grappling match. Opponent showed off his BJJ purple belt skills. Lost to an armbar submission. On to the next one,” he noted.
Vaibhav had earlier shared another great story from the tournament where he was seen ‘getting adopted’ by the Irish Team. The Indian went to the tournament without a corner and a coach but found home along with fellow fighters from Ireland including former world champion Ryan Spillane.
The next stop for India at the IMMAF Stage would be at 2020 African Open Championships which will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa. While no Indian names are currently scheduled to fight, this might change in the coming weeks.
