Usman Nurmagomedov is the cousin of former UFC Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Russian fighter has been rising in the ranks with his impressive performance and he has made it clear that he wants to follow the footsteps of his legendary cousin. Here is what you need to know about Usman.

How he started his MMA career

The professional MMA career of Usman Nurmagomedov started back in 2017 when he fought Imran Abdiev at MPF Young Talents Cup. Usman won this fight via a first-round armbar as well. In the year 2018 that followed, Usman fought twice and picked up wins in both the fights.

His second fight came at BRAVE Combat Federation’s BRAVE CF 21 against Issei Moriyama as well. After his outing at BRAVE Combat Federation, Usman got his chance at GFC where he picked up more wins. He dominated his competition in the promotion and fought at Battle on Volga as well in between.

By 2020, three years after starting his MMA career, Usman had built up a record of 8-0 to his name. UAE Warriors was another promotion that he competed in during his impressive run. As of writing, out of his 12 wins in the professional MMA run, 7 have come via TKO or KO when 3 came via submission. He has only gone the distance twice in his young career as well.

Usman Nurmagomedov Bellator

In 2021, Bellator MMA signed up Usman and gave him a debut fight against Mike Hamel at Bellator 255 which he won via a unanimous decision.

The second fight of Usman in Bellator came in Bellator 263 against Luis Muro. Usman secured a first-round TKO finish in the match to remain undefeated in his professional MMA career. He is set to make his return at Bellator 269 against Patrik Pietila.

Age and Training Details

Currently 23 years old, Usman has been training under Javier Mendez apart from his stint in Dagestan. Earlier, he had received praise from manager Ali Abdelaziz as well who claimed that Usman is a better version of Khabib Nurmagomedov.

"He's 10-0, all finishes. He's an absolute killer. He's a Muay Thai specialist and he's Khabib's brother, you understand? If you have the same blood as Khabib, you have good wrestling. I'm telling you, he is actually a better version than Khabib. He is better than Khabib. I'm telling you, people should watch for him. He's an absolute killer. He's got it all. He's got the striking, he's got the grappling, he's got the jiu-jitsu, he's got the look, and he’s got the swagger. He's knocking people out with elbows. He's the guy really to look out for. He's a phenom. He's a [combination] of Khabib, Jon Jones, Adesanya. He's a combo of all them,” Ali noted during his interview with Asian MMA.

Usman has been vocal about following the footsteps of Khabib as mentioned earlier and here is what he had to say earlier when asked about it.

"I want to follow in Khabib's footsteps, follow his journey and eventually become a better version of him. I spend my entire training camp with Khabib. It's very hard work to compete and train with him. So after training camp has finished, it feels very easy to train and fight with other people. I learn everything from Khabib. Whenever I want to know or learn something, Khabib is there,” he had said during his interview with BBC.

He also has fond memories of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, who was the coach and father of Khabib.

"He taught me everything, not only as a fighter but as a person too. He taught me how to talk to people, how to treat people, he taught me everything. I'm missing him a lot,” Umar recalls.

Weight and Height

Just like his cousin Khabib, Usman fights at Lightweight. He is 5ft 11 inches or 180 centimeters tall and has a reach of 72 inches.
