Lovlina Borgohain: Everything You Need To Know About the Indian Boxing Star

Lovlina Borgohain made history by securing a medal for India in Boxing at the Tokyo Olympics. India sent a total of nine boxers to the Olympics this year and it was Lovlina that managed to secure the lone medal in the sport for the country. Here is a look at everything that you need to know about the Indian boxing star.

Her childhood in Assam

Lovlina was born on 2 October 1997 in Golaghat in Assam as the daughter of Tiken Borgohain and Mamoni Borgohain. She was the third daughter of the couple. Tiken was a small-scale businessman in his village when Mamoni was a housewife.

Mamoni wanted her daughters to succeed in kickboxing and made them take up classes in Kickboxing and Muay-Thai at a young age itself. Along with her elder sisters, Licha and Lima, Lovlina also started with Kickboxing.

At the age of 14, Lovlina attended trials by the Sports Authority of India in her school, Barpathar Girls High School. Her performance captured the attention of renowned Coach Padum Boro who helped her to transition into Boxing in 2012.

While Lovlina had not taken boxing seriously at this initial stage, winning the sub-junior nationals in Kolkata changed her outlook.

International success

The biggest break for Lovlina came when she found a place in the Commonwealth Games Team in 2018. Although she suffered a defeat at the games, she went on to secure a medal at the World Championships which was held in the same year. In 2019, Lovlina secured her second straight World Championship medal. Both the World Championship medals of Lovlina were bronze.

In 2020, just eight years after starting her boxing journey, Lovlina secured the Olympic berth with a 5-0 win over Maftunakhon Melieva of Uzbekistan in the 2020 Asia and Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament.

Struggle before Olympics

Lovlina tested positive for COVID-19 in the lead-up to the Olympics which forced her out of the Boxing Team’s camp in Italy. She had to take a break to look after her ill mother as well prior to the games in Tokyo

The Indian, however, made a strong return at the Asian Championships in Dubai and secured a medal there which improved her momentum ahead of Olympics.
