Julianna Pena produced one of the biggest upsets in UFC history when she submitted Amanda Nunes at UFC 269 to win the UFC Bantamweight title. Nunes was the clear favorite heading into the fight and many had the impression that Nunes was unstoppable at Bantamweight.
Pena managed to break this impression but former Olympic Gold Medalist and Amanda’s teammate Kayla Harrison believes that it was not just Amanda’s day. The PFL champion noted that Amanda Nunes would starch Juliana Pena nine out of ten times.
“Yeah, I mean I was heartbroken obviously for my teammate and my friend, you know I have a lot of respect for Amanda, I helped her train, I’ve trained with her, she’s helped me you know we are teammates. I would consider her a friend so first and foremost I was heartbroken for her. I still think that if they fought ten times, nine times out of ten Amanda starches her. You know but sometimes it’s just not your night. No matter what you do, no matter how hard you prepare, no matter how good you feel or how confident you are sometimes things just don’t go your way and that’s the craziness of this sport, that’s the brutality of it.” she told TMZ Sports.
Harrison is currently 12-0 in her professional MMA career and is a free agent as of writing. There were rumors of a potential super-fight between Nunes and Harrison prior to UFC 269 but apparently, the plans for the same are on hold.
