Johanna Persson Promises Elbow Carnage against Hellen Rodrigues for Gold

WBC Muay Thai World Champion Johanna Persson will walk directly into the biggest opportunity of her career when she faces Allycia Hellen Rodrigues for the ONE Women's Atomweight Muay Thai World Championship at ONE Fight Night 33 on 12 July in Bangkok.

The Swedish striker's journey to Lumpinee Stadium represents seven years of grinding through the ranks, and now the 30-year-old from Gefle Fight Center and Sitjaopho Muaythai gets her chance to claim ONE Championship gold in her promotional debut.

Standing in her way is one of the most dominant champions in the sport. Rodrigues has been nearly untouchable during her five-year reign, collecting scalps from some of the division's biggest names.

The 27-year-old Brazilian has conquered former three-sport queen Stamp Fairtex, former two-sport titleholder Janet Todd, and former ISKA World Champion Cristina Morales.

Her most recent performance saw her dismantle Marie McManamon with a fourth-round TKO in March, extending her impressive run of title defences.

The magnitude of this moment isn't lost on Persson, who understands the rare nature of receiving a title shot in her ONE Championship debut.

"It means everything. I can't actually describe how big of a dream this is," she said. "It's a testament to what I'm doing is working, it's a milestone for all my hard work over the past six to seven years."

Persson's fighting philosophy centres around constant forward pressure and imposing her will on opponents.

Her coaches have identified her as primarily a punching-heavy fighter, though she possesses the technical skills to adapt when necessary.

"I love to push the pace and press forward. David Lehnberg, head coach says I'm a bit of a muay mat (punching-heavy style), and I could be a muay femur (technical) if I want to," Persson said. "But, always, my main goal is to press forward and conquer a fight. I want to implement my rhythm in a fight."

When asked about her path to victory, the Swedish challenger offered a chilling prediction.

"It's going to be done with elbows,” she said. “That's all I can say."
