Team India secured a record-breaking 15 medals at the 2021 Asian Boxing Championship with 2 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 8 bronze medals.
All 10 boxers from the Indian Women’s team returned with medals as well with Pooja Rani clinching the Gold Medal. Pooja defeated Mavluda Movlonova of Uzbekistan in the finals of the 75KG. She had won a gold medal in 2019 in the 81 kg category.
Elsewhere, Mary Kom, Lalbuatsaihi, and Anupama secured silver medals when Simranjit Kaur, Lovlina Borgohain, Jaismine, Sakshi Chaudhary, Monika, and Saweety won bronze medals in their respective categories. Mary Kom lost to two-time World Champion Nazym Kyzaibay of Kazakhstan by split decision in the finals.
Sanjeet Kumar secured a gold medal in the 91 KG category last day when he defeated five-time Asian Champion and Olympic medallist Vassiliy Levit. Earlier, the likes of Amit Panghal and Shiva Thapa had secured silver medals as well. Amit lost to reigning Olympic and World Champion Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan in the finals with a score of 2-3 when Shiva Thapa lost to Asian Games Silver Medalist Baatarsukh Chinzorig of Mongolia in a split 2-3 decision.
Vikas Krishnan, who returned to the Amateur circuit after a stint in the professional scene, settled for a Bronze medal alongside Varinder Singh. The 15-medal tally is India’s highest ever in the Asian Boxing Championship. The Asian Championship was hosted jointly by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) and the UAE Boxing Federation.
