The 2019 edition of IFMA Senior World Muay-Thai Championships concluded recently in Thailand and saw some huge participation from India.
Twelve athletes from the nation participated in the event and delivered some good efforts despite suffering defeats.
The Team’s campaign started off with Punam Rai who suffered referee stoppage defeat against Erdem Dincer of Turkey. Nupur Ranjan Borah, Rita Tamang, Dipankar Bohra, Hemavi Ayemi, Ranjan Singha and Tikeshwari Sahu, also suffered similar referee stoppage defeats in their respective categories.
Ashish Sethi suffered a head injury during his fight against Giovanni Mazzetti and succumbed to a referee stoppage defeat.
Anil Mehta, meanwhile, managed to push his Slovakian opponent Lukas Mandinec to a decision but could only secure a 27-30 in the Judge’s scorecard which resulted in his loss.
Janu Kondh also went the distance with his opponent from the Philippines but had a similar faith to that of Anil as he got 27-30 in the scorecard. Chandra Kanta Debbarma got a decision win over Deeptangshu Baidya in the first round but could not compete in the second round due to a leg injury that he picked up. Zakaria Eljamaria of UAE, who was supposed to face Debbarma in the second round was subsequently given a walkover.
Elsewhere, Anwitha Alva suffered a referee stoppage loss due to body injury against Jenelyn Olsim but was awarded the Bronze Medal in the category.
Despite all the losses, the team had strong participation at the World Championship this year which underlines the growth of the sport in the nation.
