Francis Ngannou is all set to defend the UFC Heavyweight Title against Ciryl Gane at UFC 270 and one of the major narratives heading into the fight has been the relationship between Ngannou and his former coach Fernand Lopez.
Lopez is currently working with Ciryl Gane ahead of the fight and during a recent interview with the UFC, Ngannou revealed that his psychiatrist had warned him about Lopez.
“I won’t say I’m surprised knowing the person (Lopez). I always knew that something like this could come from him. I was in Paris two years ago after the Derrick Lewis fight, and I was dealing with some personal stuff on my end. I was so in a bad place that I decided to see a psychiatrist. If you look at the psychiatrist’s notes, it’s funny because even two years ago she pointed out Fernand as a problem and to watch out. I thought she was, crazy. She started to break it down and put it in the notes. Now I think she was all right,” Ngannou said (h/t BJPenn.com).
Ngannou moved away from Lopez after his back-to-back losses to Stipe Miocic and Derrick Lewis a few years back and has been on an impressive run ever since. Lopez, meanwhile, had recently released old sparring footage of Gane dropping Ngannou during training which had rattled some feathers.
