It was from his mother that Indian MMA Fighter Dawood first learned martial arts. His mother knew Taekwondo and thanks to this, Dawood made baby steps into the world of combat sports.

Hailing from a family of four brothers and two sisters, Dawood’s father has a bag shop in Delhi’s Nehru Place while his mother was a housewife. After getting an initial start of Taekwondo with his mother, Dawood discovered MMA which turned his life around.

“My first reaction was that: this is a very dynamic sport. It required a lot of bravery. I liked it very much and I started MMA back in 2018 after getting motivated by Khabib Nurmagomedov. I started training at Knockout Fight Club and started my MMA journey,” he said.

His family had concerns since MMA came with its dangers. However, Dawood was able to convince his parents that it is a safe sport if it is done in the right way. He then went on to deliver a good performance in his first fight in Gurgaon which further helped to gain the support of his parents.

“At first, I had many problems. There were financial troubles as I had to balance a job and training to meet the expenses. I also had no idea about diet and didn’t know how to manage my schedule, where to put up my fight statistics, where to join for training among others. But slowly, all these became clear to me,” Dawood recalls.

The 23-year-old has a professional record of 6-1 to his name as per Sherdog and according to him, he has also fought 8 amateur fights apart from his professional outings.

“What my experience has taught me so far is that even if there isn’t anyone supporting you, you should not give up. Don’t ever give up on your dreams. I’m motivated by the dream that I could make India proud one day, I could make my parents proud one day and become the best fighter in India,” he says.

With the dream close to his heart, Dawood is hoping to improve his record and fight in a big platform next before representing India internationally.

“I would like to fight at a big platform now. And in the future, I hope to represent my nation in the international circuit. There are hurdles for me. I don’t have proper nutrition or financial support but I will get there and achieve my dreams,” he concluded.
