BJJ phenom Danielle Kelly is all set to make her ONE Championship debut at ONE: X. Kelly, who recently signed with the promotion, will be going up against Mei Yamaguchi in a submission grappling match at the 10-year-anniversary show of the promotion on March 26, 2022.
The announcement was made by ONE Championship last day along with the announcement of an atom weight showdown between Itsuki Hirata and Jihin Radzuan.
Kelly signed with ONE Championship back in February and had expressed her happiness on the move. She noted that she will be grappling under the EVOLVE MMA banner while also adding that she will be working towards a potential transition to MMA.
“Happy to announce I am officially a @onechampionship athlete. I am also proud to be apart of @evolvemma. I’ll be doing grappling bouts under them and when I’m ready to do MMA they’ll be the promotion I’ll fight under,” she had wrote.
She is coming into the matchup following an impressive outing against UFC title contender Carla Esparza and was scheduled to lock horns with UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas as well. The 25-year-old BJJ Black belt already holds wins over names like Roxanne Modafferi, Cynthia Calvillo among others in grappling bouts.
Yamaguchi, meanwhile, is coming into the bout on the back of a three-fight losing streak in MMA. She suffered back-to-back losses to Denice Zamboanga, Julie Mezabarba and Jihin Radzuan between 2020 and 2022 but it should also be noted that the Japanese star holds a black belt in BJJ.
She will be looking to gain her momentum back and ruin the promotional debut of Kelly when she steps into the ONE Circle at ONE: X.
ONE X will be headlined by the ONE Atomweight title fight between Angela Lee and Stamp Fairtex. The event will also see the special-rules showdown between Demetrious Johnson and Rodtang.
