Every once in a while, there comes a bout that completely shifts the landscape of boxing. It is safe to say that the showdown between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko was one such game-changer.

Joshua and Klitschko delivered their instant classic on April 29, 2017, under the bright lights of the Wembley Stadium. A crowd of nearly 90,000 people had gathered to witness the fight which went eleven rounds before Joshua produced a great comeback to secure a TKO win.

While almost everyone is aware of what happened inside the ring, not many know the story that went down behind the scenes.

Anthony Joshua: The Road to Klitschko explores just that.

The documentary, which is now available to stream in India exclusively through Discovery Plus, takes us through the fight camp and build-up towards the fight.

It was just after Joshua’s fight against Dillian Whyte in 2015 that the production team started filming the journey of the British Heavyweight star. With footage of almost two years in their hand, one would probably doubt how much effort had gone into trimming it down. But this is where the documentary succeeds. The access to such a huge library probably gave the team enough options to test multiple permutations and combinations before coming out with nearly 80 minutes of pure magic.

Throughout the run time, the documentary successfully manages to make us feel that we are part of Joshua’s team which is preparing him for the fight. At certain points, the emotional packing in the scenes is so intense that subconsciously, we end up connecting with Joshua at levels that we as boxing fans usually don’t.

This experience, in particular, is something that makes the documentary worth it. While we have seen many sports-based documentaries in the past as well, The Road to Klitschko opens doors to a new world that is emotional and thrilling at the same time.

The fact that the fight between Joshua and Klitschko was built up entirely on respect and the merit between the boxers only adds to the whole experience.

Over the years, trash talk has been an integral part of promoting fights. At times, it works wonders but on most occasions, it usually ends up doing more harm than good. Nevertheless, a good portion of the boxing community believes that creating drama is essential to pull off a successful event.

Almost all the boxing documentaries that we’ve come across thrive on this fact. The Road to Klitschko is an exception.

Beyond all this, the documentary also lays down the hard work and dedication that goes into the preparation for a fight. Though we love to watch fights and love the fighters, we often get overwhelmed due to our selfishness and forget the amount of effort that each fighter puts in before stepping into the ring. Even when the documentary takes us through an emotional roller coaster with the feeling of Joshua sitting next to us, it also forces us to open our eyes towards the sacrifices that each boxer has to go through before they put their lives on the line to entertain us.

The combat sports fans in India can watch Anthony Joshua: The Road to Klitschko exclusively on Discovery Plus.
