It is the matchup that has the martial arts world buzzing. ONE Championship has confirmed that Christian Lee will defend his ONE Lightweight MMA World Championship against Tye Ruotolo at The Inner Circle 37 on Friday, November 6.
The Lee family and the Ruotolo family are two of the most celebrated names in modern martial arts, and on November 6, their stories will intersect in the most dramatic way possible.
Lee needs no introduction. The 28-year-old Singaporean-American superstar has been rewriting ONE Championship's record books since making his debut at just 17 years old in 2015. His 18-4 ONE record with 17 finishes paints the picture of a finishing machine who operates at a level no lightweight in the world has been able to match.
He first claimed the ONE Lightweight MMA World Championship in 2019, becoming the youngest male MMA World Champion in ONE history with a comeback victory over legendary Shinya Aoki.
Multiple defenses, a brief title loss to South Korea's Ok Rae Yoon, and a statement reclaim followed, before his rematch victory over Alibeg Rasulov last year reinforced his standing as the most complete lightweight on the planet.
Ruotolo represents something entirely new, however. The 23-year-old American, twin brother of reigning ONE Lightweight Submission Grappling World Champion Kade Ruotolo, conquered the submission grappling world by claiming the ONE Welterweight Submission Grappling World Championship and defending it multiple times before making the leap to MMA.
The transition has been seamless and spectacular. His debut saw him submit Christian's younger brother Adrian "The Phenom" Lee, handing the talented younger Lee the first defeat of his career in a performance that immediately placed Tye among MMA's most exciting new stars.
He followed that up by finishing Shozo Isojima in under three minutes just over two months later, and now he enters his third MMA fight with an opportunity that no submission grappling champion in ONE has ever done before – claim a ONE MMA World Title.
