Nazareth Lalthazuala has earned his shot at the big stage, and he is walking into it with a confidence that borders on the fearless.
The unbeaten Indian southpaw makes his ONE main roster debut in the co-main event of ONE Fight Night 47 on Saturday, September 5, taking on American veteran Gilbert Nakatani in a strawweight MMA contest.
His 8-0 career record with five finishes includes one of the most explosive ONE debuts in recent memory, a 17-second demolition that immediately put the strawweight division on notice. Now, stepping onto the main roster for the first time, Lalthazuala carries the hopes of an entire nation with him.
"As an Indian fighter, I will try to live up to the expectation at its best. I will try my best. I ask all my Indian friends to pray for my fight. I ask you to pray for me too," he said.
The occasion calls for nerves, but Lalthazuala is operating in a headspace that is almost entirely free of pressure. If anything, his biggest concern heading into the main roster debut is the opposite of anxiety.
"I'm very excited about it. My opponent is very good as well, and I'm happy about the training. I'm very excited. I have no pressure at all, but I'm scared I might be overconfident," he explained.
Standing across from him is Nakatani, 32, an American-Japanese veteran who began his martial arts career in wrestling and carries 9 career wins into the contest.
The experience and defensive solidity Nakatani brings to the ring have not gone unnoticed in the Indian's camp, and Lalthazuala has been working specifically on breaking through those defenses.
"My opponent is really good at defense, and he has a lot of strength, so I'm preparing my best to counter the defense. He has a lot of weakness too, but there's nothing to point out," he said.
Ultimately, however, Lalthazuala believes the physical matchup favors him when it comes to the attributes that matter most inside the ring.
"I think my speed is better than his, and my strength and cardio are much better than his as well," he added.
