The much-anticipated fight between Jake Paul and Nate Diaz finally went down today.
The opening round of the fight saw Jake Paul in the driving seat as he wobbled the former UFC star with some deadly punches. Diaz, however, started finding his rhythm as the fight went forward. In the fourth round, Diaz seemed in the driving seat but the momentum was short-lived.
Jake Paul landed a huge knockdown in the fifth round which slowed down Nate Diaz once again. Paul was having his moments throughout the fight and thought Diaz landed some punches in the ending rounds, it was Paul that came out on top with the win as the judges ruled the fight in his favor via a decision.
Leading up to Saturday's bout, Paul (6-1) continually emphasized the urgency of not only securing victory but doing so in an impressive manner. Reflecting on his loss to Fury, a defeat that skeptics used to question his professional capabilities and diminish his novelty, Paul admitted briefly contemplating retirement from boxing.
He acknowledged that a second loss on Saturday would significantly derail his career trajectory, yet a remarkable triumph over a well-known figure like Diaz would provide the resurgence he sought. A victory would potentially propel Paul to pursue a rematch with Fury or advocate for a showdown against another accomplished professional boxer.
In the days preceding the match, Diaz revealed his insights into Paul's boxing achievements against former MMA opponents. Although he refrained from lavish praise, Diaz acknowledged Paul's astute business acumen in strategically choosing opponents such as Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Anderson Silva, all former UFC fighters.
Diaz's awareness stemmed from recognizing that most MMA fighters primarily possess grappling or wrestling backgrounds, with stand-up striking often being a secondary skill. This knowledge, Diaz explained, was beneficial throughout his MMA journey. He and his brother Nick, both hailed as icons in the MMA realm, diligently honed their boxing skills from a young age, utilizing this advantage to dominate less proficient adversaries within the cage.
In the co-main event of the night, Amanda Serrano got the better of Heather Hardy. Serrano was in the driving seat throughout the fight and though Hardy suffered a loss, she won hearts with her performance.
