AKA Coach Javier Mendez notes that Islam Makhachev is open to a rematch with Javier Mendez.
Mendez discussed the super fight that served as the main event of UFC 284 in February during his interview on Jibber with Jabar, Episode 126. He said that although his fighter prevailed, Volkanovski was a much tougher opponent than they had anticipated, and that as a result, he had grown to respect the current featherweight champion more.
"Was it a tough fight? Hell yeah. Was it tougher than I thought? Hell yeah. Did he [Alexander Volkanovski] gain my full respects? Hell yeah, he got my respect. But am I looking forward to the rematch if they have one? Hell yeah,” he said in the interview.
He went on to add that Makhachev would be open to accepting the fight if UFC decides to make the same.
"We're not dodging nothing. If they...UFC puts that match together, it's gonna happen. It's gonna happen willingly for both parties. They're [Volkanovski's team] gonna want it, we're gonna want it and I would hope they [the UFC] would make it a huge event because that fight delivered,” he added.
Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski fought in the main event of UFC 284 in Australia. The fight ended up becoming the fight of the night as both the fighters ended up putting a show for the fans throughout the five-rounds.
In the end, it was Islam Makhachev that came out on top via a unanimous decision but at the same time, Volkanovski earned the respect of the fans for his performance against the Dagestan fighter.
Ever since the fight, fans have been calling for a rematch and it would be interesting to see if UFC goes ahead with the same.
