The Indian boxing contingent won six medals, including a historic gold, at the World Boxing Cup Brazil 2025, which concluded Saturday in Foz Do Iguacu.
Hitesh Gulia became the first Indian boxer to win a gold medal at the World Boxing Cup after receiving a walkover in the men’s 70-kilogram final. His opponent, Odel Kamara of England, was unable to compete due to injury.
In the men’s 65kg final, Abhinash Jamwal put up a strong fight against Brazil’s Yuri Reis but settled for silver after a close contest.
India also claimed four bronze medals through Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (50kg), Manish Rathore (55kg), Sachin (60kg) and Vishal (90kg), all of whom lost in the semifinals. As per tournament rules, both semifinal losers received bronze, following Olympic boxing standards.
Following his gold-medal win, Gulia credited the 10-day preparation camp in Brazil for the team’s success. “The camp helped me learn a few tactical nuances that helped me a lot in the competition. This tournament has provided us fantastic exposure at the highest level and I am happy that I could grab the gold medal,” he said.
More than 130 boxers, including Olympians from 19 nations, took part in the event. While the competition featured both men's and women's divisions, India only fielded a men’s team, with the women unavailable due to the recent senior national championships.
Brazil hosted the first of three World Boxing Cups scheduled for 2025. Kazakhstan and India will organize the remaining events in June-July and November, respectively. Ranking points earned at each meet will determine qualification for the season-ending World Boxing Cup Finals.
