Mumbai-based Martial Artist Neyha Sonawane fought off a man who attempted to abuse her last week at Nala Sopra Station in Mumbai.
Neyha was climbing on the escalator at the station when the man tried to misbehave with her. Neyha reacted by slapping the person who then punched her before running off but got caught by a citizen.
The brave girl then went on to file a formal complaint against the abuser in the railway police station and further actions were taken by the department.
Neyha is a Karate practitioner and interestingly trains under MMA India President Sharif Bapu who has conducted self-defense workshops all across the country. He has also been vocal about the importance of women empowerment through martial arts and has taken multiple strides as the MMA India President to promote the same.
While the incident highlights the bravery of Neyha, it also throws light on the problems that women face in India.
As per NCRB’s report, one rape was reported every 16 minutes in India in the year 2019. In 2018, the time frame was 15 minutes. Shockingly, 71% of the rapes in India are unreported meaning that these stats do not cover them.
