India at Tokyo Olympics: Lovlina Borgohain confirms medal for India

Indian Boxer Lovlina Borgohain has confirmed a medal for India after entering the semi-finals of the Welterweight category by defeating NC Chen of Chinese Taipei in the Quarter-Finals today. 

Lovlina pushed the action in the starting minutes and closed the distance effectively against Chen. The Indian was also landing some good body punches from the clinch when Chen had her share of counter punching. Three judges ruled in favor of Lovlina after the round when two judges gave it to Chen. A close fight unfolded in the second round as well. Lovlina was having success with body shots whenever she clinched and even landed multiple times while breaking. When the round ended, Borgohain was upon three cards. Chen was under pressure due to this in the third but could not break through the defenses of Lovlina. In the end, the fight was ruled in favor of Lovlina Borgohain. 

Earlier today, the campaign of Simranjit Kaur came to an end after she suffered a unanimous decision loss to Sudaporn Seesondee of Thailand in the Round of 16 of the Lightweight category. Seesondee won with a score of 5-0 after having a clean sweep in all three rounds even with a good showing from Simranjit in the first round.  

Last day, Mary Kom bowed out of the Olympics after a close defeat to Ingrit Valencia of Colombia in the Round of 16. It was a close 3-2 score through which Kom lost the match and she had expressed her displeasure in the judging post the match as well.

Satish Kumar progressed into the quarter-finals of the Super Heavyweight category with a win over Ricardo Brown of Jamaica via a split decision. Lovlina Borgohain and Pooja Rani had also secured their spots in the quarter-finals earlier after securing wins in their respective matches.

Vikas Krishan, Ashish Kumar, and Manish Kaushik, meanwhile, bowed out of the tournament when Amit Panghal will be in action in the coming days. Vikas, who was in action on Day 1 went down to SQM Okazawa of Japan in the Round of 32 when Manish lost to Luke McCormack of Great Britain.

Top seed Amit Panghal will be in action on Saturday 31 July 2021 at 7:30 AM IST when he fights Yuberjen Martinez of Colombia in the round of 16.
